Sandwiches have always been a quick and easy means of satisfying our hunger. During times of ration or shortage, fillings were simple and nutritious. 1940s-era recipe collections include many simple ideas for sandwich filling suggestions like peanuts, eggs, leftover meat or fish, cheese and even beans. Believe it or not, sometimes several of these unlikely companion ingredients were in the same sandwich!
